As an NSTA representative, I had the distinct pleasure of attending Reading Blue Coat School’s production of Legally Blonde the Musical at the charming Kenton Theatre in Henley-on-Thames on Wednesday 4th March 2026. Under the expert direction of Mr Devin Moller and the spirited musical direction of Mr James Woodhall, this vibrant, feel-good production sparkled with energy, flair, and sheer “Omigod You Guys” enthusiasm from start to finish.
Legally Blonde The Musical follows the journey of Elle Woods, a fashion-loving sorority president who defies expectations by enrolling at Harvard Law School to win back her ex-boyfriend. Along the way, Elle discovers her own intelligence, resilience, and self-worth, challenging stereotypes and proving that determination, kindness, and authenticity can triumph in even the most intimidating environments. With its upbeat score, witty storytelling, and message of empowerment, the show offers performers a chance to shine, and this cast seized that opportunity with zeal.
From the moment the house lights dimmed, the attention to detail was immediately clear. Clever use of a video wall kept the pace brisk and the energy high, while thoughtful lighting transitions added polish and professionalism throughout. The costumes were a particular triumph: from courtroom chic to Delta Nu fabulous, each look radiated character and precision, celebrating the unapologetic confidence at the heart of the show.
The opening number set the tone instantly. The ensemble’s rendition of “Omigod You Guys” was infectious, both vocally tight and visually dynamic, establishing the Delta Nu sisterhood with boundless enthusiasm.
Leading the company with poise and charisma was Mili as Elle Woods. Her performance was a true tour de force – effortlessly balancing comedy, charm, and emotional vulnerability. Vocally, she soared through Elle’s demanding score, delivering powerhouse moments in “So Much Better” and “Legally Blonde (Reprise)” that could rival a professional performance. Mili’s voice was phenomenal and each song felt effortless, whilst being absolutely note-perfect.
Opposite her, Daniel brought warmth and sincerity to Emmett Forrest, crafting a stellar performance that grounded the show’s heart. I was genuinely taken aback by the quality of his performance throughout – a real shining star that captivated the attention of the audience from his first entrance. Beyond his note-perfect singing, each movement, facial expression, and breath was executed with purpose and skill. This was a performance with the confidence, talent, and understanding of a professional actor.
As Professor Callahan, Max delivered an impressively commanding performance, capturing the duality of charm and menace that makes the character so compelling. He was confident, owned the stage, and really performed this complex role with ease.
Other standout performances include Lucy as Paulette Bonafonté, whose delivery of “Ireland” brought the house down. She balanced humour with genuine pathos, and her scenes with Elle provided many of the evening’s most charming moments. Harry as Warner Huntington III captured the role’s vanity and suave self-assurance with just the right measure of humour, while Liddy brought sparkle and sass as Vivienne Kensington.
The ensemble was bursting with energy, particularly in the larger-scale numbers such as “Gay or European” and “Whipped Into Shape”. The latter was led by Jemima as Brooke Wyndham, whose athleticism was nothing short of astonishing, while the former featured a wonderfully comedic turn from Ben and Max as Nikos and Carlos. As a collective, the ensemble moved with seamless precision; the choreography was both ambitious and expertly executed, ensuring the full-cast sequences were the defining highlights of this stellar production.
Legally Blonde the Musical is a deceptively complex show, marrying fast-paced comedy with a message of resilience, empowerment, and self-belief. Reading Blue Coat School’s production captured all of this with joy, confidence, and heart. It was a production that celebrated individuality, teamwork, and the power of hard work – all while keeping the audience smiling from start to finish. Bravo to the entire cast, crew, and creative team for delivering a show that was, quite simply, “So Much Better”!
